I and You, a different and rewarding story by Lauren Gunderson, has been added to The Playmakers' schedule with a limited run March 22, 23, 24, 26, 28, 31, 2019. The play is about two smart, word-loving teens who quote poetry. Right! They are authentically offbeat teen characters who will be hard to forget in "a script that transcends the predictable." Jan Farrington, reviewer for Theatre Jones:North Texas
Performing Arts News goes on to describe this comedy/drama: "Housebound because of illness, Caroline hasn't been to school in months. Confined to her room, she has only Facebook for company. That is until classmate Anthony bursts in - uninvited and armed with waffle fries, a scruffy copy of Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass and a school project due the next day... Caroline is unimpressed all round. But an unlikely friendship develops and a seemingly mundane piece of homework starts to reveal the pair's hopes and dreams - as well as a deep and mysterious bond that connects them even further
"When two area high school seniors contacted us separately, to see if there was anything they could be in before they graduate this spring," says Suzanne Boles, Artistic Executive of The Playmakers, "this multi-layered, surprising script finally found its light, after waiting in line for the right cast for three years. We are very excited to be able to work this play into our schedule for a limited run. Every teen in our area will "totally" understand this play. Adults will certainly find it familiar. But all will gasp towards the end."
Caleb Haidsiak, Grove senior, last seen in Lion in Winter (2015) and Maya Sharp, a senior from Jay, last seen in Elves & the Shoemaker (2010), have been unavailable until now due to their concentration on band and vocal music in their respective schools. They are finally able to take on the wonderful, but difficult roles of Caroline and Anthony in this uplifting portrayal of friendship, youth, and living life to the fullest.
Ashley Davidson, a Playmakers' director, choreographer and actor (last seen as Snow White in Disenchanted) stepped in to direct this production and get it up and running in record time. She is familiar with the playwright's style having been the lead in Silent Sky, another Gunderson play about female astronomers produced by The Playmakers in 2016.
Lauren Gunderson was, after Shakespeare, the most produced playwright in America last year. Author of over 20 plays, she has also received the Lanford Wilson Award at the Dramatists Guild Awards and two Steinberg/ATCA New Play Awards. For I and You she won the 2014 Steinberg Award and the coveted American Theatre Critics Association's New Play Award.
Thursday, Friday, Saturday & Tuesday performances begin at 7:30 p.m. Sunday matinees begin at 2:00 p.m. The doors open 30 minutes prior to curtain.
Tickets for adults are $15. Students, upper eleme
