Within Grand Lake Oklahoma near Grove is the General Stand Watie Gravesite. Visitors to the area will see the memorial for the only Cherokee Indian to obtain officer rank during the Civil War. General Stand Watie was in the Confederate Army and the last southern leader to surrender. Watie became ill and died while away from his home near the Grand River. He was buried in Delaware County at the Polson Cemetery. The Oklahoma Historical Society has placed a plaque at the entrance of the cemetery in his honor.
