Memorial Day Weekend: Boat & Water Safety Tips

Memorial Day kicks off the busiest season on the lakes across the country. There a number of boat and water safety tips you and your family can take to increase safety.

Wear Life Jackets

Always wear life jackets. Those who do not know how to swim should wear them. And, those who are more advanced swimmers. If for some reason, you are overboard, the waves and currents of the lake changes the situation quickly. Life jackets should be properly worn and zipped up.

Discourage Drinking

Drinking alcoholic beverages while driving boats is not safe. It is much like drinking and driving on the road. Also, ensure there is a back up individual who can drive the boat who is not under the influence in case things go wrong while on the water. This leads us into the next boating and water safety tip.

Always Expect the Unexpected

It is important during the holiday weekend to always expect the unexpected. Anytime you are boating, fishing, and enjoy the lake, be aware. Conditions can change rather quickly – the weather can change, someone can become sick, or someone may not be able to swim.

Boat Prep

Boat preparation is important before heading out the lake. Ensure you are following all state and local guidelines when it comes to the boating season. Do you have enough life jackets for everyone? Do they function properly? Have you done a safety checklist before the grand weekend?

Is the engine running properly? How about ventilation? Do the electrical systems check out okay? Take advantage of free vessel checks in your local area. Everyone will have a grander time on the lake or around the day for the holiday weekend!

Have a safe and fun Memorial Day Weekend!
